Thanks for commenting, Rachel! Being prepared for class is definitely a wonderful tip. We love your poster idea! :)

I love your suggestions for classroom routines! I found myself nodding in agreement as I read through them...especially the one about hand signals. I wanted my 7th grade students to start becoming more independent and accountable for their actions and needs, which meant letting them get up to get their own tissues, sharpen their pencils, etc... However, I, too, found myself getting distracted by a student out of their seat and some students had a hard time getting to and from their seats without distracting the entire class. I am willing to try hand signals in the fall.

One other suggestion I have is about being prepared for class. I work hard to get my lessons and materials ready for my students, I think they should be ready to learn, too. I created a simple poster for them to have a quick visual reminder of what is necessary to be prepared for my class: their science notebook, a sharpened pencil, their Chromebook, and a pair of earbuds.

Enjoyed reading this. We're changing our schedule next year (from 7 periods to eight periods), losing 5 minutes per period. I've also heard many of the students I'll be teaching don't hurry to get to class on time. I think the wrap-up timer will help with the notion "I'll respect your time at the end of the period and you'll respect mine at the beginning. Thanks!

BTW, I may try that bathroom hand signal, too.

Hey Tracy! The one that I typically use is: http://www.online-stopwatch.com/

It allows you to use the stopwatch full screen and it will also count up or down down. You are also able to set it to any amount of time you wish. Hope this helps!
